A Quest for Respect
with
THE GROUCHY LADYBUG

Introduction
A grouchy ladybug, who is looking for a fight, disrespects everyone she meets. She finally learns good manners and how to respect others.
Would you like to help the grouchy ladybug learn about herself and respecting others?
It will be your quest to discover the meaning of respect and to become a ladybug expert.



The Task
After reading the book, THE GROUCHY LADYBUG by Eric Carle, work with your partner to discover the following:
  • chart the activities of the grouchy ladybug that day
  • draw and describe the main character
  • discover the meaning of respect
  • research facts about ladybugs and make your own
  • discuss personal feelings of respect and then role play

The Process
Follow these steps to complete your quest:
1. Read THE GROUCHY LADYBUG with your partner.
2. Make one chart like the one below and write what the grouchy ladybug did each hour of the day.
5:00 A.M. The friendly ladybug and the grouchy ladybug met on the leaf to eat aphids.
The grouchy ladybug didn't want to share, so she flew away.
6:00 The grouchy ladybug tried to fight with the yellow jacket.
Then she flew away.
7:00 .

12:00 P.M. .
1:00 .
2:00 .
3:00 .
4:00 .

3. Visit the main character page by clicking on this ladybug above. Print out one worksheet page and complete together.
4. Look up the meaning of "respect" in the dictionary and then go to the word above. Click on it to read more about respect.
5. Now you need to research real ladybugs. Click on the life-like ladybug
above. Read the page and together, write 3 facts in sentences.
6. If your teacher agrees, you and your partner can make your own friendly and grouchy ladybugs from rocks. You will need 2 round flat small rocks. Paint them red and let them dry. Then use a permanent black marker to draw the dots. Glue 2 eyes on the part you want to be the head. 7. Wow!! Your quest is almost over. Talk with your partner about how all the characters in the story were feeling. Act out with your partner what any of the story characters might say to the grouchy ladybug about respecting the feelings of others.
